Artist talk: Amélie Laurence Fortin
Creation from data
The lecture will focus on three specific projects by Canadian artist Amélie Laurence Fortin. All three rely on data from cosmological and astrophysics studies to create kinetic art pieces and sound installations that take a novel approach to time, space, and motion in the visual arts.
She also experiments with the balance of power between the seen and unseen, the positive and negative, in how her pieces are positioned in the gallery space.

The lecture begins with a discussion of her Under the Suns (2018) exhibition, which embodies Fortin’s fascination with the gravitational waves recorded by the Ligo and Virgo telescopes.
Next, the SUNBURST (2020) exhibition is covered, an expression of the artist’s interest in solar meteorological data transcribed into Bartels’ geomagnetic Kp Index. Lastly, the lecture looks at her recent Two Revolutions Per Minute (2021), a project inspired by the sonification of data, an alternative method of processing complex scientific data.
Out Of Orbit
Flying out of orbit is an astronaut’s worst nightmare and is the frequent catalyst of countless thrilling Sci-Fi flicks. Artists, however, have a different take. For them, it’s a sensational experience that breaks through into undiscovered countries and unprecedented insights.
Did you know that orbit initially meant eye socket? It’s a quirky fact that helps artists approach natural and scientific phenomena in Out of Orbit from a fresh perspective. Through the lens of personal observation and experiments, they explore the margins where art, knowledge, and perception intersect. The outcome may not be what you expect and forces you to ask: Is a coalescence of art and science more or less than the sum of its parts?
