Somewhere between being and becoming.
A cube represents a body, a being on the outside. The cube has three dimensions and is an absolute, predictable entity.
Only as it bursts, it becomes unpredictable and its surfaces unfold. Several sides inverse, fall upside down or end up inside out.
As the interior world is revealed, inner voices become loud and alter egos present themselves.
This work represents a reconciliation of contradictions,
a cube that becomes a circle.

In the beginning was nothingness, from which all that is sprang into being. We have to believe in nothing to comprehend the origins of everything. Thuy believes in nothing – the void from which everything originates. An explosion occurs, creating time, matter, energy, and space. The temperature of an explosion is hotter than a thousand suns, but as it cools, structures form and elements become compounds. Those compounds are infinite. And so too is space – where nothing is required, and everything is possible. Thuy believes in everything.

Thuy Lê Thi Thu won the LUCA Showcase Award in 2019, which is how KU Leuven awards up-and-coming LUCA School of Arts talent. Among others, the winner will enjoy a one-year residency at BAC ART LAB.

On Saturday 18 December at 17:00 you can attend her performance for free at BAC ART LAB. Register now!

BAC ART LAB is KU Leuven’s very own house of art and science. At the end of the day, artists and scientists are asking the same big questions. And they want to understand, explain, and even change the world around them. The BANG! Big Bang City Festival is the perfect occasion for presenting an inspiring four-part programme.

During an artist talk, Haseeb Ahmed explains how art and science reinforce and enrich each other.

Students and staff members can apply for studio space in BAC ART LAB so that KU Leuven literally creates space for experimentation. Thuy Lê Thi Thu had the world at her feet, graduating from LUCA School of Arts and is one of our resident artists. Get acquainted with her work during a solo exhibition.

BAC ART LAB is also a lab for new forms of education, where theory and artistic practice go hand in hand. Intermedia students present a short performance. And group exhibition by students from Media & Information Design (MIND) will make your head spin.
